Will it work while charging?

Short answer: Yes

The the light and speaker both work while the unit is charging.
The brightness control is disabled, though. You can only get 100% brightness while the unit is charging.

The USB port is disabled while the unit is charging. The USB port draws power from the battery, not from the AC adapter. So while the unit is charging and the battery is drawing power, it cannot also provide power to the USB port.
