Can I Install a Door Closer and Wind Chain at the Top of a Door?

While it's not recommended to install both a wind chain and a door closer at the top of a storm door or screen door, it can be done with careful planning. However, note that in most cases, your wind chain will come into contact with the door closer and potentially scratch it. Door closers which feature wind chains include the SK80 and SK8730 door closers.

First, ensure that the top door rail is wide enough to accommodate the door bracket of your closer. Ideal Security's door brackets measure to .690" in width.

Next, follow standard installation instructions. When installing your door closer, be careful not to install your jamb bracket too high, as this will prevent the jamb bracket pin from easily being inserted in place. To install your wind chain, check our instructions and follow along with our wind chain installation video.

Depending on your storm door or screen door, you may need a door closer with a torsion bar, such as our 3015 door closer. While the 3015 does not come with a wind chain, the wind chain can be purchased separately here. The 3015 comes with a bracket that can be used to hook the door chain away from the closer and minimize contact, but there will invariably be contact between your door closer and wind chain.
