What Screw Can Be Used to Fasten Garage Door Hinges and Slide Locks?
Struggling to replace your garage door hinges and slide locks? It could be that you're not using the right screw to fasten your hinges and locks.
While Ideal Security's Zinc and Black garage door hinges come with fasteners and screw caps, you might be using a different hardware kit or possibly misplaced the screws. Luckily, it's not too difficult to figure out the right type of screw for the job.
Although you can re-use the same screws from a previous installation, if they're rusted or damaged, that may impact the performance of your garage door opener. The last thing you'd want is a hinge falling loose in the middle of opening or closing a garage door.
Generally, garage door hardware requires hex head metal tapping (or self tapping) screws - specifically, #12 screws, #14 screws, or M6 screws. As for the length of the screw, that entirely depends on the thickness of your garage door. Standard lengths include 3/4" (20mm) screws or 1" (25mm) screws.

When shopping around for new garage door hardware screws, make sure you bring old screws and hardware with you to a hardware store to be able to check the size of screws and directly compare them to your hardware.
Final tip! Be prepared to make pilot holes of the appropriate size if the material of your garage door is thick. Be careful not to make them too large.
