Are those small pins really strong enough to hold all the weight?

Yep, they sure are.

The pins are engineered to have a double shear strength 1500 lb. 

The Ladder-Aide was stress tested at 900 lb, 4x more than the CSA-ANSI Weight Standard for for Type II ladders (225 lbs).
